Wal-Mart sued over medical-pot firing

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against Wal-Mart for the termination of a Michigan employee whose doctor verified his illness qualified for medical marijuana use.

…American Civil Liberties Union

(CNN) — The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against Wal-Mart for the termination of a Michigan employee whose doctor verified his illness qualified for medical marijuana use. Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retailer, fired Joseph Casias in November 2009 after he failed an on-the-job injury-related drug test. Casias suffers from a rare form of cancer in his nasal cavity and brain, and he relied on his doctor’s medical marijuana prescription to alleviate the daily pain. Casias is one of about 20,000 legal medical marijuana users in Michigan. Medical marijuana has had a life-changing positive effect for Joseph, but Wal-Mart made him pay a stiff and unfair price for his medicine, said Scott Michelman, staff attorney with the ACLU Drug Law Reform Project. No patient should be forced to choose between adequate pain relief and gainful employment, and no employer should be allowed to intrude upon private medical choices made by employees in consultation with their…

Wal-Mart, Chicago Unions Cant Agree If They Have an Agreement

Chicago aldermen gave zoning approval today for Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

…By Leslie Patton
June 24 (Bloomberg) — Chicago aldermen gave zoning approval today for Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to build a second store in the city, praising a union agreement with the retailer to guarantee raises within a year. Moments after the vote, a Wal- Mart spokesman said there was no such deal.
Wages are at the center of efforts by the world s largest retailer to expand in Chicago, where the unemployment rate is more than 10 percent. Wal-Mart has only one store within the city s limits, and organized labor is challenging plans to add dozens more unless workers are paid more.
The Chicago City Council s zoning committee voted to rezone property on the far south side where Wal-Mart is seeking to build a store that would sell food as well as general merchandise. The retailer said this week that it would build several dozen stores in Chicago during the next five years if it could obtain approval.
Labor and political leaders said Wal-Mart promised to pay at least $8.75 an hour to workers and minimum…

People of Walmart Coming to a Bookstore Near You

Kids, get ready to revamp your Christmas lists: People of Walmart, everyones favorite blog mocking the insane and disheveled, is coming out in book form this September 7 from Sourcebooks. The title? People of Walmart: Shop and Awe

…of which will be original content) and fan-submitted stories about their own experiences. (Oh man, I bet it ll be sold in Walmart That s so meta!)We re curious to see how the blog translates to book. A lot of critics see the blog-to-book phenom as the end of literature, a slap-dash process whereby publishers merely serve up warmed-over digital content in a glossy cover.Seeing as how the authors plan on offering original content and perhaps even more of the written word, we wonder if they will be able to create something new and engaging that will appeal to more than just the adherents of the blog. We ll see come September. In the meantime, there s always the People of Walmart Rap to tide us over. For more Social Media coverage:Follow Mashable Social MediaSubscribe to the Social Media channelBecome a Fan on FacebookDownload our free apps for iPhone and iPadPrint StoryMore About: books, humor, MARKETING, people of walmart, pop cultureMore Stories in Social Media Google Instant Doesn t Like Your Sexy Searches …

Couple arrested for trying to sell baby at Walmart

A couple in California faces child endangerment charges for allegedly trying to sell their 6-month-old baby outside a Walmart store.

…which led them to become suspicious and report it to the police.
Police arrested both Fousek and Tomasini at their home. Officers said the couple appeared high on meth. The police report claims that Tomasini was also breastfeeding the baby while under the influence of drugs, which probably made Dora the Explorer even more riveting.
The couple was allegedly trying to get $25 for the six-month-old.
Well, Fousek and Tomasini are both dirtbags, to be sure. But, if you re Walmart, you have to be kind of happy about this publicity. Even people trying to sell a baby in your parking lot know that you have to roll back prices. Obviously, selling babies isn t a great business model, but you have to admire how these two kept in line with Walmart s corporate messaging. That baby would have been at least $59.99 at Target.

Wal-Mart Wants To Track Underwear With RFID Tags [RFID]

Theft of underwear and jeans must be a pretty big issue for Wal-Mart stores considering that the company wants to track each garment using RFID tags. All that stands in this plan’s way is some itsy-bitsy privacy concerns. Click on the image for a closer look.

…also worry that retailers will be able to scan customers who carry new types of personal ID cards as they walk through a store, without their knowledge. Several states, including Washington and New York, have begun issuing enhanced driver’s licenses that contain radio- frequency tags with unique ID numbers, to make border crossings easier for frequent travelers. Some privacy advocates contend that retailers could theoretically scan people with such licenses as they make purchases, combine the info with their credit card data, and then know the person’s identity the next time they stepped into the store.

The whole idea seems a bit awkward, but then again: It’s not really any worse than creepy men putting GPS-tracking systems in their lovers’ lingerie….

According to the AP:

“Patrick Fousek, 38, and Samantha Tomasini, 20, were arrested early Wednesday, hours after Fousek allegedly approached two women outside Walmart and asked if they’d like to purchase his child.
The women initially thought Fousek was joking, but when he became persistent, they became suspicious and reported it to police

When police arrived at their house, they found Fousek and Tomasini high on you guessed it! meth. Child Protective Services took the baby, and Fousek and Tomasini have been charged with being under the influence of narcotics and child endangerment.
And that’s your depressing Walmart story of the week….

Walmart spends millions of dollars and thousands of man-hour

the corporate order

…It isn t so much about the $7,000 as it is Wal-Mart s insistence that everybody their vendors, their competition, their employees, and especially the U.S. government MUST recognize that they (Wal-Mart) are omnipotent.
Their very size has enabled them to screw their vendors. You wanna have your product sold in Wal-Mart stores? You follow their rules. Wal-Mart doesn t like what you charge them for your product? They ll adjust the invoice to what they want to pay. Co-op ad allowances? For other retailers, this means featuring the vendor s product in their ad. For Wal-Mart, featuring the product means they can aim their camera down the aisle the product is in. Bingo co-op ad dollars from every vendor with a product in that aisle. If the vendor doesn t like it, too bad. They know if you don t sell at Wal-Mart, you won t sell your product, period.
This is what they do to vendors. And because the vendors have fallen in line, granting Wal-Mart an impressive amount of power, Wal-Mart will do everything they possibly…
